I think the point where language starts to break down as a useful tool for communication is the edge where poetry and art occurs.
Envision being so obsessed with language that it starts showing up in your work, in your dreams, in your pasta… Yet being so unprepared for this preoccupation that you have no clue what to do and somedays you feel like throwing in the towel- or scooping your eyes out with a roofing shingle. There are worse things, I know.
Certainly it’s in these times that I am so glad to find that Bruce Nauman and I are very much alike. He, too, studied mathematics and physics and is “fascinated by the nature of communication and language’s inherent problems”. Oh, soulmates. There is only one Bruce Nauman and if I could breakthrough to being even one-tenth as amazing, my world will be alright.
